While COVID-19 has changed our lives this year, some operations in the navy have to continue because we must always be ready to defend Singapore.

Our Base Defence Squadrons continue to stand their watch to ensuring that our naval bases - the second home of our sailors - are safe and secure.

To minimise the risk of community spread, our officers and sea soldiers have been staying in the bases for prolonged periods. While this means that they will be away from their loved ones, they are appreciative to have a sea of support from their family and friends while they carry out their duty to Singapore.

As the Company Sergeant Major for the Changi Defence Squadron, 2WO Lucas Chan watches over his sea soldiers' morale and discipline. During this COVID-19 period and extended time away from home, he pays extra attention to their well-being, taking time to chat with them so that any issues they face can be resolved.

In addition to landward defence, the Base Command Squadrons also stand their watch for our naval bases' seaward defence.

One of our sea soldiers LCP Javier Loh was supposed to celebrate his 20th birthday earlier this month. However, his birthday fell on the first day of the extended stay away from home and this meant that LCP Loh could not celebrate his birthday with his family.

Although LCP Loh felt sad, he understood the need for the extended stay-in period.

To motivate him and bring up his spirit, his fellow troopers celebrated his birthday with a special birthday cake!
