N.E.mation! is an annual digital animation competition organised by Nexus for students from Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges and Centralised Institutes to express their thoughts on Total Defence through one-minute animation clips. With the help of industry professionals, students with no prior experience will be able to produce broadcast-quality animation clips that will be screened in cinemas and on television.
Since its inception in 2007, the competition has enjoyed positive reception, attracting more than 16,000 student participants. This year, N.E.mation! 11 received 760 entries and more than 1,600 students took part.
To participate, students were invited to form teams of three to four members and submit a creative pitch on a given theme. The theme for N.E.mation! 11 is "Together We Keep Singapore Strong". Singapore has remained safe and peaceful over the past 51 years because of the efforts of all Singaporeans. This is Total Defence at work. With the threats we face today - including terrorism, cyber-attacks, and pandemics - Total Defence remains relevant, and requires all Singaporeans to step up and play their part. There are many things Singaporeans can do to keep Singapore peaceful and safe. Our greatest strength lies in the unity and resilience of our people.
Students were given the opportunity to express their thoughts on what and how Singaporeans can do to keep Singapore peaceful and safe, and to reflect on how our greatest strength lies in the unity and resilience of our people.
N.E.mation! was made possible with strong support from many partners who hosted immersion visits and sharing sessions to help the teams to develop their story ideas.
The winners of the competition are determined by a combination of public voting (50%) and judging (50%), by a panel comprising industry professionals, academics and representatives from government agencies. The top 10 finalist clips were judged based on the following criteria: (i) creativity and content (45%); (ii) entertainment value (25%); (iii) animation skills (20%); and (iv) aesthetics (10%).
Public voting took place from 14 January to 5 February, and the public could vote via four ways: (i) on the N.E.mation! Website via desktop; (ii) on the mobile website with smartphones (www.nemation.sg); (iii) on the voting app at the official Facebook page (facebook.com/nemation); and (iv) via SMS. This year, the competition had 48,846 voters participating; a 68% increase in number of voters since we first introduced the four voting platforms in Season 8.
