Organisation and Structure
BG Tan Tiong Keat assumed the appointment of Commandant, SAFTI Military Institute on 7 Jul 2022. He is responsible for the professional education and training of all Officers, Warrant Officers, Specialists and Military Experts in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
BG Tan joined the SAF in 1998. He held various command and staff appointments, including Commanding Officer, 30th Battalion Singapore Combat Engineers; Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Force; Commander, Army Combat Engineers Group; Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Personnel); and Head Joint Manpower Department. In his last appointment as Commander, 2nd People’s Defence Force Command / Island Defence Task Force, he led the military forces deployed for homeland defence and homeland security, including round-the-clock protection of key civilian and military installations. He also worked closely with the Home Team to ensure the security of key events and respond to major civil emergencies in Singapore.
BG Tan was actively involved in the organisation of key national-level events, notably as Chairman Show and Dynamic Defence Display for National Day Parade 2017. He was also part of the pioneering team that organised the first National Day Parade at the Marina Bay Floating Platform in 2007.
BG Tan was awarded the SAF Merit Scholarship in 1999 and graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (USA) with Honours degrees in Political Science and Psychology in 2003. He also attained a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the US Army Command and General Staff College in 2009. In 2014, he was awarded the SAF Overseas Postgraduate Award (General Development) and graduated with a Master in Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management in 2015.
BG Tan received the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military) in 2017.
BG Tan is married to Mdm Ong Han Han, and they have three sons – Isaac, Jacob and Kyler.
SWO Ng joined the SAF in 1990. He had served in various key command and staff appointments in the SAF, including Company Sergeant Major of 1st Army Deployment Force; Regimental Sergeant Major of 1st Singapore Infantry Regiment; Brigade Sergeant Major of 24th Singapore Infantry Brigade; Officer Commanding of Specialist Cadet School; Directing Staff of SAF Warrant Officer School (SAFWOS) Leadership School; Wing Comd Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) of SAF Military Intelligence Institute; and Head Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (TUAV) of SAF Military Intelligence Institute.
In addition to SWO Ng’s colourful military background, he was honored to be the SAF Day Parade Sergeant Major in 2015, which marked the 50th year of National Defence (SAF50).
SWO Ng assumed the appointment of Institute Sergeant Major, SAFTI Military Institute on 21 Jul 2022.
For his significant contributions to the SAF, he was also awarded the following prestigious awards: SAF Good Service Medal in 1995; SAF Long Service Award for (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 Years); SAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for (12, 15, 20, 30 Years); SAF Senior Parachutist Badge in 2007; State Medal Efficiency (Military) in 2010; SAF Regimental Sergeant Major Appointment Award in 2012; State Medal Long Service (Military) in 2016; SAF Letter of Commendation in 2019.
SWO Ng is happily married to Mdm Lee Foong Ling with two kids – Xavier and Tiarra.
