Singapore and Indian Navies Conclude Annual Maritime Bilateral Exercise

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indian Navy (IN) conducted the annual Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) from 24 to 29 October 2024. This year’s exercise comprised a shore phase held at Visakhapatnam, India, followed by a sea phase held in the waters off Visakhapatnam and the Bay of Bengal.

The RSN deployed a Formidable-class frigate RSS Tenacious, with an embarked S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter. The IN participated with a Shivalik-class frigate INS Shivalik with an embarked MH-60R Seahawk, a Sindhughosh-class submarine, a P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, and two MiG-29K fighter aircraft.

During the shore phase, both navies participated in joint planning, professional exchanges and sports. Both navies also conducted Subject Matter Expert Exchanges to share best practices related to Submarine Rescue and Maritime Air Operations. At sea, the navies conducted complex warfare serials including gunnery firing, air defence and anti-submarine warfare. The sea phase concluded with a sail-past of participating ships.

The successful conduct of SIMBEX 2024 underscores the enduring partnership between the IN and the RSN. Commanding Officer of RSS Tenacious, Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Chan said, “SIMBEX is a strong testament of the long-standing bilateral ties between the Republic of Singapore Navy and the Indian Navy. Through the years, SIMBEX has not only grown in complexity but also in scope. The exercise is a valuable platform for both navies to hone operational competencies and enhance mutual understanding. It also provides a medium for both navies to exchange professional knowledge.”

First held in 1994, SIMBEX has expanded beyond conventional naval warfare to include elements of maritime security. Apart from SIMBEX, the two navies interact regularly through a range of activities, including professional exchanges, staff talks, and training courses.
