Singapore Signs Arms Trade Treaty

The Permanent Representative of Singapore to the United Nations (UN), Ms Karen Tan, signed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) on behalf of the Singapore Government on 5 December 2014 (US time) at the UN Office of Legal Affairs in New York.

Singapore has consistently supported global efforts to establish common international standards for the transfer of conventional arms.

The ATT is the first legally binding instrument negotiated at the UN that regulates the international transfer of conventional arms.  Countries which are parties to the treaty are required to abide by a set of common international standards that aims to eliminate the illicit trade of conventional arms and prevent their diversion.

The signing of the ATT reaffirms Singapore's commitment to international efforts to eliminate the threat posed by the illicit arms trade, and to international disarmament and non-proliferation initiatives that promote global peace and security.
