Second Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing visited an open mobilisation and equipping exercise for an Infantry brigade this afternoon. About 3000 Operationally-Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) from 76th Singapore Infantry Brigade (SIB) reported at Nee Soon Camp for in-processing, equipping of weapons and personal equipment as well as refresher training. During his visit, Mr Chan was briefed on the Army's mobilisation system and how the one-stop Mobilisation and Equipping Centre (MEC) concept has made mobilisation processes more efficient. Since 2009, the MEC concept has allowed NSmen to be equipped at their designated reporting camp. This affords NSmen greater convenience and shortens the time required to fully equip them.
As part of his programme, Mr Chan also viewed various mobilisation stations and interacted with NSmen who were undergoing equipping and training. Also present at the visit were Minister of State for Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, members from the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs, the Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence and the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS). The visit by the respective stakeholders and employers to the mobilisation exercise was an opportunity for them to understand NSmen's contributions to the nation as well as express their appreciation for the NSmen's commitment to Singapore's defence. Reflecting on the visit, CSNS member Mr Allan Lim said, "I am really heartened to witness how committed our operationally-ready national servicemen are. I met with NSmen who postponed their overseas trips to be able to join their unit on operational standby. Every vocation is important and plays a part in the success of not only this exercise and in the defence of Singapore."
