Minister for Health Mr Ong Ye Kung reviewed the Officer Cadet Commissioning Parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening. A total of 214 cadets, comprising 140 from the Singapore Army, 20 from the Republic of Singapore Navy and 54 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Speaking at the parade, Mr Ong highlighted shifts in the global geopolitical landscape and how the Singapore and the SAF have changed over the past 60 years to be ready for these shifts. He said, “More than ever, we must renew the conviction we had when Singapore first became independent … The major difference between 60 years ago and now is that first, we have a far more capable SAF. Second, earlier generations have accumulated significant reserves that we can tap on during a crisis or emergency. Finally, Singaporeans are much more united and cohesive in the defence of our country.”
Mr Ong also reminded graduands of the virtues and values they will have to have to uphold as commissioned officers. He said, "From here, you will need to step forth; to initiate and drive change and transformation; to care for and lead your men and women, especially during difficult times; to perpetuate the values of discipline, professionalism and integrity in the SAF."
The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. The cadets’ vocational competencies, leadership and planning skills were refined and developed by the realistic training conducted during the course. The newly commissioned officers will continue to assume command, instructional or staff appointments in the SAF. Also present at the parade were Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Sean Wat, senior Ministry of Defence and SAF officials, as well as families and friends of the newly commissioned officers.
