Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) training in Temburong, Brunei this morning. The soldiers from the 6th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment, were undergoing jungle and survival training. Mr Lee observed the training and interacted with the servicemen.
During his interaction, Mr Lee emphasised the importance of training in a realistic and safe environment, and commended the soldiers for their professionalism and commitment. He also shared the importance of National Service in ensuring the security of Singapore. Mr Lee was accompanied by Chief of Army Major-General Melvyn Ong and other senior SAF officers.
Sharing his thoughts during the visit, Mr Lee said, "Good to see the soldiers in good spirits, they have been well trained and prepped for this exercise. This is their first time in the jungle, and they are learning something new. We have put a lot of attention on to safety. I was talking to the officers; they make sure the soldiers are prepared for what they are going to see. Physically, also prepare them to be fit enough for the training that we are going to throw at them."
Singapore and Brunei share a close and long-standing defence relationship. In addition to the regular training which the SAF conducts in Brunei, both militaries interact through frequent bilateral exercises, professional exchanges, visits and cross attendance of courses. These exchanges have enhanced the professionalism and strengthened the ties between the two armed forces.
