The core duty of a Military Musician is to provide quality music support for all parades and ceremonies of the Singapore Armed Forces.

Career Opportunities
Musician

Every new musician will attend the Basic Military Musician Course to be equipped with the necessary skills to perform his or her duties. Military Musicians will work towards muscial excellence with practical tuitions, music theory classes, and aural skills training. The coveted Military Musician badge is awarded only upon the successful completion of a series of stringent assessments, symbolising the entry into the ranks of the Singapore Armed Forces Band.

In an effort to further groom our Military Musicians, the SAF Band provies numerous professional development opportunities not just in music performance and ensemble training, but also in the area of arts management, pedagogy, and corporate training. Thus far, our Military Musicians have, for instance, completed internships with the Singapore Symphony Group, and attained professional diplomas and post-graduate degrees from tetiary institutions such as the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (National University of Singapore).

On a case-by-case basis, Military Musicians are provided with funding to pursue such professional development opportunities, which also include examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College London.

Career Opportunities
Principal Musician

Musicians who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities may be offered a Principal position. Principal Musicians are tasked to oversee the overall musical standards and operational readiness of their respective section musicians. They also also work closely with the Director(s) of Music and Drum Major to ensure that all training and administrative matters within the section are run smoothly.

Drum Major

A visual icon at every parade and ceremony, the Drum Major encapsulates the professionalism and discipline of the SAF Band. Military Musicians who display exemplary character, leadership, and drills will be selected for the Drum Major Course.

The Drum Major is responsible for the high standards of discipline and drills, and acts as the Sergeant Major of the band. He or she also works closely with the Director(s) of Music to coordinate the logistics of each parade and cceremony.

Director of Music

A Director of Music is a commissioned officer of the Singapore Armed Forces and holds a minimum rank of Military Expert 4. Directors of Music take on heavy responsibilities as commanders-in-charge of a band. They provide vital musical direction for the band to perform quality, functional music in support of any parade or ceremony.

The selection of a new Director of Music is effected on a need-by basis, and candidates are subject to a battery of auditions and an interview. The successful candidate will be awarded a full scholarship to attend the Bandmasters’ Course at renowned military music institutions like the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall (London, United Kingdom) and the Royal Marines School of Music (Portsmouth, United Kingdom).

Eligibility / Music Requirements

Each applicant will be assessed on his or her musical proficiency, academic qualifications, and professional experience. Upon receipt of a formal application, each applicant will have to undergo a video audition, followed by an ensemble and live audition. Applicants who pass the audition rounds will then be invited for an interview.
