Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen hosted the annual Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) Volunteers’ Dinner this evening to recognise the contributions, support and commitment of 387 volunteers serving on 39 MINDEF boards and committees. Dr Ng also presented certificates of appointment and re-appointment to 80 volunteers at the dinner. Held annually since 1998, the MINDEF Volunteers’ Dinner serves to thank volunteers for their invaluable contributions and support for MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Speaking at the dinner, Dr Ng acknowledged the important role played by the volunteers. He said, “All in all, we have 387 precious volunteers that serve in 39 boards. That is not a lot, but you do a lot, and your impact is great. I wish I could mention each of your valuable contributions. Each of you helps us, the SAF and Singapore, maintain trust. Because of your efforts, they trust that MINDEF, the SAF, and the Government will do a good job in building a strong defence, they trust that their sons will be well taken care of and can train safely, they trust that their feedback and efforts as employers and the community are appreciated.”
Dr Ng also emphasised that we should not take anything for granted in an increasingly volatile global security environment. He said, “In all this turbulence, there is a bright spark for us here, and these are the positive comments when we have visiting foreign dignitaries or guests. When I hear these positive remarks, I tell them in turn that we take nothing for granted, and that as a small country, things can go very wrong. But quietly and among ourselves, we can be gratified that our system has done well and withstood great shocks.”
The volunteers serving on MINDEF boards and committees are industry experts in both the private and public sectors. Their contributions in diverse sectors areas such as law, medicine, counselling, engineering, science and strategic communications allow MINDEF to stay updated on industry best practices and organisational processes. Through their extensive networks, the volunteers also serve as the link between MINDEF and the public by promoting public awareness on defence and inspiring support for National Service.
Also present at the dinner were Senior Ministers of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How and Mr Zaqy Mohamad, as well as senior officials from MINDEF and the SAF.
