AnythingButRegular: LTC Ng Tze Peng, Head of Control of Operations and Readiness, General Staff (Operations)

This week, we speak to Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Ng Tze Peng to learn more about his Army career, including his current appointment as Head of Control of Operations and Readiness (CORE) in the General Staff (Operations).

What are your roles and responsibilities as Head CORE?

As Head CORE, I ensure our Army’s preparedness and operational effectiveness by leading a dedicated team managing the General Staff Operations Centre (GSOC) and collaborating with GS(Ops) branches and units to oversee operations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

My role can be described as a blend of three key functions. As a weatherman, I monitor training exercises locally and overseas, forecast operational needs, and anticipate risks to keep our Army ready for any challenge. As a locksmith, I conduct readiness audits and recall/mobilisation exercises to ensure active and National Service (NS) units are fully prepared while managing critical assets—from ambulances to specialised units—to unlock effective solutions during crises. Finally, as a concierge, I connect units, services, and agencies to coordinate seamless responses to incidents, ensuring swift restoration of normalcy at home or abroad.

Together, these roles enable my team to uphold the Army’s readiness, safeguard Singapore’s security, and support the nation whenever called upon.

What is a typical day like for you?

My day begins on a personal note as I send my kids to school — a grounding moment before diving into the unpredictable rhythm of work. The GSOC keeps me updated 24/7, whether in the office or on the move, ensuring I am always aware of operations or emerging incidents.

Each day is different. It can involve conducting readiness audits, managing incidents, or fine-tuning processes to strengthen the Army’s preparedness. Supported by an amazing team, I focus on staying ahead of challenges and ensuring that readiness remains a way of life for our Army.

Why is it important for our Army to maintain a high level of operational readiness?

Operational readiness is our lifeline. In this increasingly unpredictable world, our Army must always be ready to respond swiftly to any threat or crisis, safeguarding Singapore’s sovereignty and security. As a small nation with limited strategic depth, we cannot afford to be unprepared—our readiness deters aggression and reassures our citizens of their safety.

We will support national efforts beyond defence. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, our Army was critical in managing quarantine facilities and logistics. By maintaining well-trained personnel, reliable equipment, and efficient processes, we preserve peace and stability while reinforcing public confidence in our capability to protect and serve.

How does our Army leverage on technology in your work?

Technology is a cornerstone of our Army’s agility and efficiency, particularly in high-pressure scenarios. Consider time-critical evacuations- what once required countless calls and labour-intensive manual tracking is now streamlined with real-time asset tracking systems, enabling faster, more accurate responses while minimising the risk of human error.

From automating routine tasks to managing crises, technology streamlines the workload and allows my team to focus on what matters most. It is not just about doing things better—it is about being ready when every second counts.

How have your prior experiences helped in your current appointment?

My past roles taught me adaptability and resilience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I supported SAF's readiness, navigating evolving challenges despite having contingency plans in place.

As an Operations Officer (S3) in the 2nd Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (2 SIR), I gained operational planning experience. While outfield in 2015, my battalion was activated for the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's lying-in-state, setting up tents and barricades overnight at the Padang and managing long queues. Later, we oversaw NDP 50's spectator management, ensuring security and smooth crowd control.

These experiences sharpened my leadership and problem-solving skills. However, nothing fully prepares you for an appointment like Hd CORE. As Hd CORE, I continue to learn and adapt daily, relying on my superiors, peers, subordinates, and family's support to navigate this challenging role's demands.

What makes your work #AnythingButRegular?

Every day in this role is #AnythingButRegular—there is no script for managing unexpected crises, supporting operations, or ensuring readiness at all hours. CORE is the nerve centre, staying vigilant so our Army remains operationally sharp, day and night.

What truly makes it fulfilling are the people I work with — visionary bosses who lead by example, dedicated colleagues who consistently go above and beyond, and committed NSF and NSmen who inspire me with their passion and resilience. Their efforts remind me of why our mission matters.

There is immense pride and honour in serving the Singapore Army. When my kids ask why I wear the word “Singapore” on my uniform, I explain that it represents being part of a vital institution committed to safeguarding our nation and way of life. These moments remind me that my work is not just a job—it is a responsibility and privilege to protect what matters most. That is what makes this work #AnythingButRegular.

What do you usually do during your free time?

Free time is family time. Whether we’re travelling, sharing meals, or simply enjoying time together at home, these moments recharge me and remind me of what truly matters.

I also stay active through outdoor activities and keep up with current events to stay sharp. Balance is key, and these activities keep me grounded and focused.

Any words for your family?

To my family, especially my wife, thank you for your endless patience, love, and support. My work often means long hours and, occasionally, responding to incidents while at home. Thank you for being my constant source of strength and standing by me through everything.

Any words for our NSFs and NSmen on operational manning?

To our servicemen and servicewomen on operational manning, thank you for your dedication and commitment. Your efforts, often at the expense of personal time, are crucial to our Army’s ability to respond and protect the nation. Your vigilance and readiness embody the spirit of service that keeps Singapore safe. Remember, your contributions—visible or behind the scenes—make a significant difference. Take pride in your role, stay sharp, and continue to uphold the resilience and dedication that define our Army.

Thank you for your service. Army Ready, Soldier Strong!
